The first was how fresh the terror still was in everyone’s mind. It had just been mere days since the attacks, and the sight of a plane flying over the wilderness area we were in caused people to duck down. Inside I’m sure we all knew this camp was not a terrorist target by any means, but it was the first glimpse into how the world was going to change. Never before had I seen such nervousness caused by an every day occurance: a plane flying over head. The other image that sticks in my mind from that weekend happened before we all turned in one night. We all gathered, teachers and students, in the large field outside the meeting room.

People quietly joined in through choked voices. It was a way for us to feel like we were remembering those people killed, and remembering the search efforts that were still going on in New York. From the tears in the circle, it was obvious it was also way for us to grieve what happened to our country together. While we were safe in our little wooded campground with our friends, I don’t think any of us forget for a second what was happening outside of there.
