On the evening of Saturday 8 April, the eve of Brunel’s birthday, there will be a free stage show and spectacular firework display in Bristol linked to the switching on of the new lighting system at the Clifton Suspension Bridge. The main stage for performances is now by The Observatory at Observatory Hill on the Clifton Downs near the suspension bridge, about a mile from the city centre. 7.30pm and 7.55pm Brunel Brass. 7.45pm acta will perform extracts from their community play about Brunel. 8.10pm Dance Bristol. 8.30pm Bristol Choral Society. 8.55pm Andy Sheppard performs specially commissioned piece with 200 saxophonists. The Suspension Bridge lights will be switched on at around 9.10pm followed by the firework display. The event will finish by around 9.30pm. All timings are approximate and may be subject to change. The best viewing areas for the fireworks are on Brunel Way, the Brunel picnic park adjacent to Brunel Way and Sion Hill in Clifton. It is a 20-minute walk from the city centre along the harbour to Brunel Way. A ferry service will also be in operation during the evening. |
