Anyway, to get straight to the point, as you most probably realised from the title, today’s column is going to list some of the many of Bristol’s night-clubs, their main characteristics and my recommendations. As always, feel free to send me an e-mail with your comments, suggestions or experiences from Bristol’s night venues. Hopefully you all know by now that Bristol is a huge city, with many places where a student can have fun and enjoy a good night out, but here are 20 night venues I recommend {listed alphabetically, not in order of preference}: 1. Academy – One of biggest clubs in Bristol; it is always hosting important events and welcomes many DJs and gigs. As it has three different bars and dance floors it can comprise three different types of music simultaneously. Great place to meet new people, drunk people, stoned people, all kinds of people. Make sure to visit one of the “Come n’ Play” events on Thursdays or “Ramshackle” on Fridays. 2. Antix – A nice, cozy atmosphere, for those who want to relax with their drink and company on the comfortable couches but also for the ones that want to shake their bodies on the dance floor. Not suitable for wild stuff! 3. Blue Mountain – With a large dance room on each floor, they will definitely charge you more than what the music really deserves and you need to whisper a short prayer before you go in that the place will not be full only with horny guys on ecstasy. It is also quite a long route to walk there, since it is beyond the shopping centre in Broadmead. However, the dance poles on the upper floor and its huge balcony make it a good place to visit at least once, especially if the weather is nice and a big event is hosted. 4. Brownstone – One of the posh ones, with relaxed, leather couches and an appealing dance floor. A guaranteed good time, especially if you have the right company and if you visit the club on a Thursday or Friday, which are considered Student Nights. 5. Dojo – Though it can easily get packed, as it is not a huge club, the music is entertaining, and in combination with some drinks, you can have a good laugh and an enjoyably time on the dance floor. The drinks can be a bit pricey but it is rather surprising that most people recommend it as one of the best ones in town. 6. Elbow Rooms – Right in the middle of Park Street, it is often preferred as a pre-club, where people can get started with – or rather continue from the pub – their drinking. Nothing special, but entrance is free and you can meet all kinds of people in there. 7. Evolution – Opinions are split; some consider it a sad place to visit as it is full of miserable, desperate-for-sex people, others claim it is good fun and very student-friendly. Famous for its “Wedgies” night on Saturdays with some good offers on drinks, be sure not to miss it. Separated in two rooms; one playing the old, cheesy music and the other with the more up-to-date r'n'b/dance/trance music. 8. Fez – A cute, cozy, underground club in Broadmead, divided into smaller rooms, with comfortable sits; you can huddle in the corner with your friends and have a good time joking and drinking, or alternatively get sweaty on the dance floor among a bunch of total – but friendly – strangers. 9. Fiesta Havana – Right next to Fez, this Latin-themed venue is an eclectic mix of sumptuous colours and rich texture, all with a sun-bleached Cuban theme. The two-storey venue caters for almost every occasion, but make sure you try out their cocktails. 10. Level – Situated on Park Row, this one is preferred by many students for a wild night out. With a more spacious, but dark, underground floor, you will definitely encounter lots of drunk or drugged people that have no idea what is going on. If I am not mistaken, a fatal fight occurred outside the club some months ago, but then again you never know when bad luck is going to strike you. 11. Morph-s – The Hellenic Society’s sponsor for this academic year, located on Park Street. Its peculiar but friendly owner and DJ blends a selection of Greek, English and European music. Depending on what you like, you can visit it on a Friday or Saturday if you desire a wild, packed atmosphere, or on any other night if you demand a more relaxing, romantic atmosphere with your company. 12. Oceana – Definitely considered the most posh club in Bristol, it is a very demanding club – do not expect to walk in there wearing trainers, a baseball cap and a regular T-shirt! You literally need a map to walk around the club, as it comprises of 5 main bars and dance-floors; each one with a different type of music and the corresponding audience. Mondays are considered Student Nights, offering a great opportunity for a fun night out, a chance to catch up with many familiar people or to meet new ones. 13. Panache – Another posh club, found in Broadmead, it has spacious rooms, a large dance-floor {no drinks allowed on it!} and comfortable stools, chairs and couches. Student-night on Wednesdays, with good music and a nice atmosphere. Thursdays might turn out to be risky, as the music is rather old and cheesy and the place gets packed with locals {ages: 40+}! 14. PoNaNa – Right opposite Sainsbury’s Central on Queens Road, it is another club that gets a long queue most of the nights. A similar decoration and atmosphere as Fez-Club, since it is owned by the same people. Tuesdays are Student-Nights but it can easily get chokingly packed, with a not-so-great ventilation system. Nice music though and a good layout of the rooms. 15. Soda – If you are looking for a friendly, relaxing place for you and your friends, then this is definitely the one. Hard to spot, it is found on a dark street, right before you reach the Academy, on the bridge side. Pleasant, relaxed, it is quite small but does not get easily packed. Both students and locals {young ones though} gather there, blending nicely in a friendly atmosphere. 16. Thekla – Dark, loud and wild; it makes a perfect venue for Drum n’ Base nights. Student-gathering place, good offers on drinks but nothing special. A pretty standard type of music, people and atmosphere, and you should expect to find quite a few people on drugs, trying to take drugs or pretending to be on drugs. 17. Three – Right at the end of Park Street, this is one of the most preferred clubs due to its friendly atmosphere and nice layout. Large dance-floor in each room for hosting a variety of music every night. Make sure to visit one of the many parties that take place there or the Mediterranean Nights that take place every Thursday. 18. Tube – Located on a small street, almost opposite Bar Three, it is a small underground lounge-bar. Its music and leather couches are extremely comfy and relaxing. Make sure to visit it on nights where you simply seek a place to sit down and chat with friends, enjoying your drink. 19. Vibes – Its rainbow-coloured sign, is a perfectly good indicator of what type of club it is. Gay and lesbian couples merge happily on the dance-floors of the club but do not imagine anything extreme. Straight men and women can still have a good time, enjoying the music, the drinks and a nice company. 20. Yia mass – The precursor of Greek clubs in Bristol, located on Park Street. It draws people from different ethnicities, including Greek, Slavish, Spanish and many English locals as well. It can easily get unbearably packed, especially on weekends, but surprisingly enough many people prefer it for its friendly and original atmosphere. Chimera PS. Make sure to visit the relevant websites of each one if you want further details on music and prices or read people’s reviews for each one. |
