This position (No. Planet-Universe 19) is funded by the Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique (CNRS) to carry research as part of the African Monsoon Multidisciplinary Analysis (AMMA) program. This study will be conducted in a group that is strongly involved in the AMMA program and implies interactions with AMMA partners. It will capitalize on the wide amount of data collected during the intensive period of observation in summer 2006 over West Africa. The main objective of the research is to quantify the role of different processes influencing trace gases in air masses sampled over West Africa through a combination of data analysis and modelling (e.g. Lagrangian chemical model, trajectories). A particular focus will be on the analysis of aircraft data collected in July/August 2006 during the period when deep convection is very active. One aim will be to understand processes governing oxidant levels (ozone, hydrogen peroxide) in convectively uplifted air masses and the role of wet scavenging. Preliminary analysis of data has also shown that long-range transport of trace gases from outside the region (e.g. biomass burning emissions from central Africa) was also important. The relative importance of these sources compared to local sources (e.g. soils, lightning, vegetation) will be examined. For further information about this research project please contact Kathy.Law@aero.jussieu.fr or Gerard.Ancellet@aero.jussieu.fr The position is available one year initially - possibly renewable for a further year. Positions start on 1 September or October 2007. Monthly pay is 2500 Euros gross. The DEADLINE for applications is 30 APRIL 2007. Applicants should have: * a Ph.D. or equivalent degree at the time of employment in atmospheric science * not have worked previously in the lab applied for. The only exception to this rule is for someone returning to the lab after a period of absence of at least one year; * there are no nationality restrictions. * be in possession of your diploma for less than two years * have knowledge of numerical modelling, atmospheric chemistry/dynamics, and/or data analysis. Experience of computer programming (IDL, Fortran) is highly desirable. Some knowledge of French would also be useful. Please send the completed application form (including the names of at least 2 referees) to the lab director, Dr. Alain Hauchecorne, Service d'aeronomie, RГ©duit de VerriГЁres - BP 3, Route des Gatines, 91371 Verrieres le Buisson Cedex, France. Send application also to Alain.Hauchecorne@aerov.jussieu.fr with copy to Kathy.Law@aero.jussieu.fr. Forms and further information are available at https://www2.cnrs.fr/DRH/post-docs07/?pid=8&lang=en The Service d'aeronomie is located in central Paris at the Jussieu campus of the UniversitГ© Pierre et Marie Curie (http://www.upmc.jussieu.fr). It is a joint CNRS/University laboratory which is also part of the Institut Pierre Simon Laplace (IPSL). It carries out research into a wide range of topics related to atmospheric science. Thank you for kind consideration. **************************************************************** Dear Colleagues, on behalf of HC Hansson, we are pleased to circulate the following job announcement: The Stockholm University Climate Research Environment (SUCLIM; <http://www.suclim.su.se/>www.suclim.su.se) is now recruiting a postdoctoral scientist to work within a cross-disciplinary project with both isotope geochemists and atmospheric scientists aiming at applying molecular and isotopic methods to better understand the origin, composition and properties of climate-forcing atmospheric combustion particles (black carbon) with field campaigns in South Asia and EMEP stations in Sweden and on Svalbard. It is a constituent member department of the Lancaster Environment Centre (LEC), along with the Departments of Biological Sciences and Geography and the NERC's Centre for Ecology and Hydrology. Environmental research in the University is organised into four themes of: environmental change and pollution; organisms and the environment; catchment and aquatic processes; and environment and society. There is significant cross-departmental involvement in these themes. As stated in the Department's current Strategic Plan, and central to its ambitions for RAE 2008, we have identified atmospheric science as an area for development in research and teaching. Atmospheric science research at Lancaster focuses on: how the biosphere and the atmosphere interact with respect to climate; stratospheric ozone; air quality; hydrometeorology; and carbon cycle dynamics. We wish to deepen or expand our research activities in atmospheric science by recruitment of a scientist of international standing. Applicants of interest will have research expertise in atmospheric measurements (including remote sensing) and/or the modelling of atmospheric processes. An ability to work in an Earth system or a "sustainable atmosphere" framework would be preferred but is not essential - key requirements are excellence in research and a clear vision of national and international research priorities. The Department and LEC have excellent laboratory and computing facilities and there is the possibility of enhancement of these in an existing or new direction by a bid to the Science Research Investment Fund or by other funding mechanisms. The Department has vigorous undergraduate and postgraduate courses across all areas of environmental science and the appointee will, over time, be expected to contribute to our teaching and to assist in the development of our programmes. However, new appointees to our Department are initially given a light teaching load. We anticipate the successful candidate will take up post on or before 1 September 2007. Salary will be in the scale range for a Reader, or, for an appointment at the Professorial level, in the Professorial range. To informally discuss this post please contact Professor CN Hewitt at n.hewitt@lancaster.ac.uk or Professor AM Binley at a.binley@lancaster.ac.uk. To apply, please see http://www.personnel.lancs.ac.uk/ or telephone 01524 846549 (reference A763R). The closing date is 9th May 2007 and interviews will take place on 5th June 2007. In order for a full appraisal of applications to be made, the following material should be included: A completed application form; A full and detailed cv; A full publication list, with the most significant papers highlighted; A full list of research funding obtained to date; A clear statement of the applicant's research interests and their vision for how these will develop in the future. This statement might be 2-3 pages in length. Thank you for your consideration. **************************************************************** Dear colleagues, on behalf of Robert Sausen, we are pleased to distribute the following announcement: We would like to announce the QUANTIFY Summer School 10 - 26 September 2007, Athens, Greece The summer school will cover all aspects of the impact of transport on the composition of the atmosphere and on climate. The main purpose is to train graduate students and young researchers on QUANTIFY related science topics. Furthermore, the summer school should foster international contacts between experienced researchers and young scientists, and trigger new research activities in this field. Lecturers will mainly come from within the QUANTIFY Integrated Project. The summer school is not limited to participants from QUANTIFY institutions, graduate students and young researchers from other institutions are also welcome. Pre-register now at: http://www.pa.op.dlr.de/quantify/summerschool/ Please forward this information to colleagues who might be also interested. ************** КОНЕЦ ********************************** |
