MONTSALVATGE PRIZE FOR PERFORMANCE OF CONTEMPORARY PIANO MUSIC RULES OF THE 12TH XAVIER MONTSALVATGE PRIZE FOR PERFORMANCE OF CONTEMPORARY PIANO MUSIC 12, 13 and 14 November 2004 In order to propitiate the study, performance and dissemination of contemporary music the Xavier Montsalvatge Prize for Performance of Contemporary Piano Music is announced. GENERAL CONDITIONS 1 The competition is open to all pianists, with no limit of age or nationality. Pianists who have won prizes in previous editions may compete for a higher-level prize than the one obtained. 2 The competition is endowed with the following prizes: 2.1 First prize: 6,000 euros 2.2 Second prize: 3,000 euros The winner of the first prize will also be contracted for a promotional tour of a minimum of three concerts in different European cities. During the closing ceremony on 14 November, the prizewinners must perform one of the works prepared for the competition, to be determined by the organisation. 3 The Jury, chaired by Mr. Claude Helffer, will consist of prominent international personalities in the sphere of performance and composition. 4 In its evaluation the Jury will take into account, in addition to the quality of interpretation, the complexity and importance of the works, along with the coherence of the chosen programme. The competitors must present the order of the programme at the moment of registration, and it may not be modified under any circumstances without the explicit consent of the Jury. 5 The auditions and concerts may be broadcast live or on film by radio or television, and/or recorded on any type of audiovisual support. The participants waive any right or privilege relating to photographs or recordings published in any communications medium. 6 The competition will take place at the Auditorium of La Mercè Cultural Centre on 12, 13 and 14 November 2004. 7 For the auditions, the competitors will perform in strict alphabetical order, and the letter with which the competition will commence will be designated by draw. For this reason, all of the registered participants must be present at the opening ceremony on 12 November at 10.00 a.m. at the Auditorium of La Mercè Cultural Centre. 8 All of the auditions will be held in public. 9 Registration conditions: The following documentation must be submitted to the Entry Registry of the Girona City Council (opening hours: Monday-Friday 9.00- 19.00, Saturday 9.00-14.00) or sent to the Registry by registered mail (Plaça del Vi 1, 17004 Girona): • Registration form. • Photocopy of National Identity Document or passport. • Competition programme, typed on a separate sheet. It is essential to state the exact order of performance of the works, with the title, author and timing of each one. • One copy of all of the works of the competition programme (except for the works in Sections A and C). No registration which does not include the scores of all of the works will be accepted. • Biography and one photograph, minimum size 10.5 x 15 (paper) or in image file (jpg or tif, minimum resolution 300 pps). • Document certifying payment of the registration fees (36 ). The following will be accepted: - Cheque in euros (payable to “Ajuntament de Girona”), sent together with the registration documentation. - Certificate of postal order sent to: Centre Cultural la Mercè, Pujada de la Mercè 12, 17004 Girona (Spain). - Certificate of bank transfer, sent together with the rest of the registration documentation. Registrations may be made until 30 September 2004. 10 Any competitors who so request may be accommodated free of charge in private homes, subject to availability and in registration order. In addition, the organisation will provide each competitor with one daily meal ticket. These two options will only be valid during the days during which the participant continues in competition. The accommodation in private homes will be at most from 11 to 15 November 2004. In order to have access to the accommodation facility, it is essential to request it at least one month before the competition, and the day and time of arrival in the city must be specified. 11 Participation in the competition implies the acceptance of these rules. 12 In all matters not provided for in these rules, the regulations of the Local Administration in Girona shall be applicable. AUDITIONS The competition will consist of two auditions, the first being an eliminator. First eliminatory audition: • All of the works of Section A • The work of Section B A) Compulsory works: 1. Anton Webern: Variations op. 27 2. Claude Debussy: an étude of free choice 3. György Ligeti: études Fanfares and Entrelacs 4. Olivier Messiaen: Mode de valeurs et d’intensités B) One work of free choice written by a composer born during the second half of the 20th century (Maximum duration: 9 minutes) This work may be original, and the separate movements will be accepted. Final Audition: Sections C and D (Maximum total duration: 60 minutes) C) One of the following works: Joan Guinjoan: Dígraf (ed. Salabert) Cristóbal Halffter: Cadencia (Univeral Edition) Xavier Montsalvatge: Sonatine pour Yvette (ed.
