8th International Piano Competition "Mauro Paolo Monopoli Prize" May 10-15, 2005 Barletta (Italy) "Wishing the Young Generations will be at the service of the Music and can present, through the Sound, what the Great Composers created for enrich the Spiritual Life of the Human Beings" Carlo Maria Giulini Honorary Chairperson The International Piano Competition "Mauro Paolo Monopoli Prize" is dedicated to the young pianist Mauro Paolo Monopoli (Barletta 19 - 7 - 1975 Genoa 3 - 8 - 1996 ) High artistic figure,with bright, refined, sensitive enthusiastic, and of cheerful and friendly disposition, even though he was injured by an incurable leukaemia, he courageously kept on with piano studies all his life. He won several Piano Competitions and obtained enthusiastic professional qualifications during his piano recitals, thanks to an incomparable sound and phrasing and for a perfect control of piano technique and an extraordinary feeling. download the Rules RULES Announcement - Purpose - Repertory - Schedule and Candidates' Roll Call - Jury and Evaluation- Prizes - Special Prizes - Application and Information - Copyright - Final Rules 1) Announcement The 8th International Piano Competition "Mauro Paolo Monopoli Prize", organized by the "Cultura e Musica - Giuseppe Curci" Music Association and the Barletta Town Administration, sponsored by the Ministry of Cultural Heritage - Music Department, the Apulia Region and the Bari Province, will take place from 10 to 15 May, 2005 in the Curci Theatre of Barletta - Italy. It is open to pianists of all nationalities born after 1st January 1969 and not later than 1st January 1989. 2) Purpose The International Piano Competition "Mauro Paolo Monopoli Prize" try to increase the piano culture all around the world, giving a chance to the young pianists for comparing their musical thinking and for starting a professional musician career. 3) Repertory Candidates must play the following pieces: First Stage - Preliminary Round (May 10 - 11, 2005) 1) J. S. Bach - A Prelude and Fugue from the Well-Tempered Clavier (no transcriptions are allowed). 2) A brilliant character Sonata by D. Scarlatti, D. Cimarosa or B. Galuppi. 3) A piano solo work of your choice, no longer than 15 min. and not less than 10 min. Contestants who are winner of First or Second Prize in other important International Piano Competitions will pass directly to the Second Stage. In this case applicants must send with the application form a photocopy of the Diploma concerning this Prize. The Organizing Committee will decide if accept or not this exemption. Second Stage (May 12 - 13, 2005) 1) An Etude by F. Chopin or F. Liszt. 2) An Etude by B. Bartok, A. Casella, C. Debussy, S. Ljapunov, S. Prokofieff, S. Rachmaninoff, A. Scriabin or I. Stravinskij. 3) A Classic Piano Sonata of your choice, by L.van Beethoven, M. Clementi, F. J. Haydn, W. A. Mozart , F. Schubert or C.M. von Weber. 4) One substantial piano work of your choice, no longer than 15 min. and not less than 10 min., excluding the work chosen for the First Stage. This stage must be totally no longer than 50 min. and not less than 40 min. Semifinal Stage - Piano Recital (May 14, 2005) A piano recital of your choice, no longer than 50 min. and not less than 45 min. in duration. No works performed in the First Stage or Second Stage may be included in the recital. Final Stage - Piano Concerto (May 15, 2005) Contestants must choose one of the following concertos to be played with Plovdiv State Philarmonic Orchestra - Bulgaria: W. A. Mozart Concertos KV. 466, 467, 488, 491 L. van Beethoven Concerto No. 1 in C Major Op.15 Concerto No. 2 in B-flat Major Op.19 Concerto No. 3 in C minor Op. 37 Concerto No. 4 in G Major Op. 58 Concerto No. 5 in E flat Major Op. 73 R. Schumann Concerto in A minor Op. 54 F. F. Chopin Concerto No. 1 in E minor Op. 11 Concerto No.2 in F minor Op. 21 F. Liszt Concerto No.1 in E-flat Major S 124 Concerto No.2 in A Major S 125 E. Grieg Concerto in A minor Op. 16 P. I. Tchaikovskij Concerto No.1 in B-flat minor Op. 23 M. Ravel Concerto in G Major S. V. Rachmaninoff Concerto No.2 in C minor Op. 28 Concerto No.3 in D minor Op. 30 Rapsody on a Theme of Paganini Op. 43 All works in the competition must be performed from memory and must be performed in their entirety unless otherwise specified by the Jury. Performances which exceed the specified time limit may be interrupted by the Judges. The playing order of works in the preliminary stages is left to the contestant's discretion The contestants must give to the Jury three copies of each piece of the Editions they will play. They must show their passport or identity card before their first stage. 4)Schedule - Candidates' Roll Call All the candidates must be present at the Secretariat of the competition in the Curci Theatre - Barletta for the roll call at 9 a.m. on Tursday May 10, 2005. The contestants can have rehearsal on the Piano of the Competition during the same morning . The order of participation will be in alphabetical order, starting from the letter drawn immediately after the roll call. 5) Jury and Evaluation The Jury will be composed of seven well known national and international musicians, most of them coming from different Countries . We apply the Italian Ministerial Law n.2 ( 11 August 1989) about the incompatible rules for the Jury. " Yes " or " No" will judge the 1st, 2nd and 3rd stages. For the Final stage, the Jury will make a secret centesimal voting with arithmetic mean, and with the exclusion of the lowest and highest scores. The President may round the results up or down. Not more than ten contestants can pass from the Second Stage to the Semi-final Stage, and not more than three contestants can pass from the Semi-final Stage to the Final Stage. The Absolute First Indivisible Prize will be awarded to the candidate who will get the highest point and not less than 98/100; the 2nd and the 3rd prizes must have , respectively, not less than 94/100 and 90/100. At the end of each stage the issues are made public. 6) Prizes 1st absolute Prize: 6000 Euros*, Cup, Diploma and 13 Concerts (5 Concerts with Orchestra and 8 Solo - Recitals) offered from the following Corporations and Musical Associations: Bari Province Symphony Orchestra - 3 Concerts with Orchestra Italbalkan Concerts - Bulgaria - 2 Concerts with Orchestra " Cultura e Musica - G. Curci " - Barletta - 2 Recitals " Amici della Musica " - S. Severo " Il Coretto " - Bari "Amici del Pianoforte" -Marsala " Grosseto Piano Festival " " A.M.A. Calabria " - Lametia Terme " Amadeus " - Casamassima *The winner will receive 3.000 Euros during the Final Ceremony and 3.000 Euros like honorarium for the 8 Solo - Recitals. The winner must get in touch with these Corporations and Associations in order to fix the period of the Prize - Concerts and, for the Concerts with Orchestra, all the conditions. Other Prize - Concerts can be announced later. 2nd Prize: 2000 Euros, Medal, Diploma and 1 Recital 3rd Prize: 1000 Euros, Medal and Diploma Semi-final Prizes: 7 Prizes of 200 Euros and Diploma, for each semi-finalist who will not gain the Final Stage. To all the participants: Diploma Each prize will have the tax deduction at source. 7) Special Prizes Special Prize "Cosimo Alberto De Barberiis" of 2000 Euros for the best performance of Classic Sonata during the Second Stage. Special Prize of Critics Jury "Taiwan Award"of 2000 Euros presented by the Council for Cultural Affairs of the Republic of China, assigned by the Critics Jury and the Artistic Direction to the most promising talent . Special Prize " Eastern Music - Nicolaus Foundation" of 500 Euros for the best pianist coming from Eastern Europe. Special Prize " Asian Music - Nicolaus Foundation " of 500 Euros for the best pianist coming from Asian Countries. Special Prize " Italian Music - Nicolaus Foundation " of 500 Euros for the best pianist coming from Italy. Special Prize "Audience Prize" of 500 Euros for the finalist who will get more votes from the audience for the Final Concert in the Curci Theatre. Applications must be typed or filled out in block letters in English or Italian language. Applications sent after the closing date will not be considered. No payment can be required from the contestants for this utilization. 10) Final Rules. The winners must play without an appearance fee during the Final Concert; if they will not do that they will lost the Prizes. The enrolement to the Competition entails the unconditional acceptance of the present Regulations. For any controversy the Trani court is competent. Any disputes that arise due to this outline will be resolved according to the original Italian text and Italian Law. |
