Conditions & Rules

General conditions
1. The International Franz Liszt Piano Competition 2005 will take place in Utrecht, the Netherlands, from 2 to 16 April 2005.
2. The Competition is open to pianists of all nationalities.
3. Applications for participation in the Competition must be received by the Secretariat no later
than 10 December 2004.
4. Competitors must have been born after 2 April 1975 and before 2 April 1989.
5. Competitors must not have any other professional commitments during the period of the Competition.
6. The board of the Competition will decide on the admittance of applicants.
7. The board of the Competition will determine the order of performance of the competitors in each round by drawing lots.
8. At the applicant’s request, the board of the Competition will mediate in finding accommodation in or near Utrecht for the competitors during the Competition period. Relatives and chaperones must arrange for their own accommodation.
9. All semi‑finalists will be reimbursed for their air travel, up to a maximum of ? 750.
10. The Liszt Competition Foundation has exclusive rights to radio, television and internet broadcasts of the concerts and all rounds of the Competition. The Foundation also has exclusive rights to all visual and sound recordings made during the Competition.
11. The competitors must transfer all rights to the material specified above under (10) to the Foundation, its agents or licensees, by signing the form 'Transfer of Rights'. This form constitutes an integral part of the Conditions & Rules.
12. There are six prizes, with a total value of ? 45,000. In addition, a number of engagements are being negotiated in the Netherlands and abroad for the prize winners.
13. Taxes will be deducted from prizes according to the Dutch tax laws in effect at the time of the Competition.
14. The winners will be expected to perform all prize engagements. Failure to do so may result in the forfeiture of the winner’s claim to prizes, awards, and engagements, at the discretion of the board of the Foundation.
15. There will be a honorarium for all engagements. The artist's present or future agent may make no claim on a commission for the prize engagements arranged by the Foundation.
16. Prize winners of the Competition will, if requested, perform a maximum of two concerts for the benefit of the next Competition, for which the Foundation will not pay a fee, but will reimburse the prize winner's travel and accommodation expenses.
17. Decisions of the board and the jury of the Competition are final.
18. As long as the pianists are still participating in the Competition they may not contact or speak with any member of the jury.
19. By signing this application form, competitors agree to be bound by the conditions and provisions of these rules.
20. In the event of discrepancy between translations of the texts and rules, the Dutch text is definitive.


Application
1. Application can be made by the competitor or by or on behalf of the authorities of his/her country. A completed and signed application form must be sent by registered mail to the Secretariat, to be received before 10 December 2004. Exceptions may be made at the discretion of the board of the Competition.
2. Applicants must pay a non‑refundable application fee of ? 75 (plus bank charges). The payment can be transferred electronically to the following account:

The Liszt Competition Foundation must receive payment (or proof of payment) before 10 December 2004.
3. The application form must be accompanied by the following documents, which will not be returned:
a. Copy of birth certificate.
b. Two passport photographs, with the name of the applicant on the back in block capitals.
c. One photograph, minimum size 9 x 12 cm, free of copyright.
d. Information concerning the applicant's musical education.
e. A letter of recommendation from a recent teacher and/or professional musician. This letter must recommend the competitor specifically for the International Franz Liszt Piano Competition.
f. Curriculum vitae.
g. Press reviews, if available.
h. List of prizes won in other competitions, and copies of prizes.
i. List of repertoire.
j. Proof of payment of application fee.
4. Stateless applicants must submit proof of identity issued by the State of the Netherlands, or by the government of the country of residence.
5. The board of the Competition will decide which applicants will be admitted to the Competition on the basis of the information submitted.
6. Applications submitted by or on behalf of the authorities of the applicant's country of origin will be accepted without further confirmation, with the exception of information concerning the applicant's age.
7. The board of the Competition will inform the applicant of whether he/she has been admitted no later than 10 January 2005.

The Competition
1. The Competition consists of three stages
a. preliminary rounds
b. the semi‑final
c. the final
2. The order of performance of the competitors in the preliminary rounds, the semi‑final and the final will be determined by one single drawing of lots.
3. All works performed during the Competition must be played from memory.
4. All performances will take place in public.
5. Competitors selected for the semi‑final/final are obliged to participate in the semi‑final/final.


Drawing of lots
1. Lots are drawn in order to determine the order of performance of the competitors. They will be drawn at a time designated by the board of the Competition, in the presence of a notary.
2. The order of performance determined by this drawing of lots is final.


Preliminary rounds
1. There are two preliminary rounds.
2. Depending on the number of competitors, the board of the Competition will decide whether the preliminary rounds will be adjudicated by a subset of the jury.
3. In the first preliminary round, competitors must play the work specified under A, one work from group B and one or more works by Franz Liszt of the competitor's choice, which may be either original works or arrangements for piano by Franz Liszt. The total programme may not exceed 20 minutes.
4. No more than 18 competitors will be admitted to the second preliminary round.
5. In the second preliminary round, competitors must play one work from group D, one work from group E, and one work from group F.
6. The competitor must state at the time of application his/her choice of works and the order in which he/she will perform the works in each of the preliminary rounds.


Semi‑final
1. No more than 9 competitors will be admitted to the semi‑final.
2. In the semi‑final, the competitors must play a recital programme of approximately 50 minutes, which must include the Sonata in B minor (Searle 178). The competitor is free in the selection of the other works in the programme, provided that he/she has not previously played these works in the Competition. Both original works and arrangements for piano by Franz Liszt are permitted.
3. The works to be played in this recital, and the order in which they will be played, must be stated at the time of application.


Final
1. No more than 3 competitors will be admitted to the final.
2. For the final, competitors must play one work for piano and orchestra from group I and the work specified under J. The competitor must compose an original cadenza to be added to the work
under J.

The Liszt Competition Foundation is currently negotiating concert engagements in the Netherlands and abroad for all prize winners.

Among others, the engagements being planned include joint concerts with the winners of:

‑ the Young Pianist Foundation National Piano Competition 2004 (in a number of cities including Amsterdam, Paris, Moscow and New York)

‑ the 7th International Violin Competition of Indianapolis 2006 (the Netherlands and USA)

‑ the International Liszt Piano Competitions in Weimar and Budapest ('European Liszt Nights')

The Foundation will also release a number of CD recordings of the prize winner(s).



As part of his first prize, Jean Dubé (winner of the 6th Liszt Competition) played over ninety concerts across all of Europe, North and South America, the Middle East, Africa and Asia. The tour consisted of engagements at many leading music festivals and more than twenty concerts with international orchestras.
