It’s the topic that everyone’s been talking about in recent weeks: “Where were you on September 11th?” It’s the question that newscasters predicted ten years ago would be a defining question in people’s lives. I didn’t know anyone killed in the attacks, so my thoughts and emotions on the anniversary tomorrow in no way compare to the thousands of people so personally affected by that day. But as I watched the memorial dedication for Flight 93 on television today, I was amazed at how quickly the emotion from that day, and the months following, came back. Americans vowed to “never forget” the attacks or the people killed, and ten years later it is so apparent that no one is even close to forgetting.

On that Tuesday morning, I was a senior in high school. I left chorus rehearsal to walk across the hall to the gym. I first heard about the attack while I was waiting in line to get my senior ID picture taken. “A bomb went off in the World Trade Center,” someone said. It didn’t phase me much. I pictured a little backpack bomb being set off in the lobby by someone. I wasn’t even entirely sure what the World Trade Center was. I got my picture taken and headed back to chorus. As I got into my next period class, science, I realized that what was happening was much bigger than I had first thought. Our teacher had the TV on in the corner of the room, and we watched the smoke come out of the buildings. I remember she cried during class. I also remember being nervous on the ride home because someone on the local news had mentioned the power plant in Niagara Falls as being an area terrorists could potentially target.
